English Learners in the USA in 2007, as reported by the New York Times

New to English, an interesting interactive feature on The New York Times website, shows the number of students across the US that are learning English as a second language.

The United States is filled with speakers of many languages. These languages need to be respected in our educational systems and the students need to be given the proper support in learning SAE. This respect and understanding does not only apply to the foreign languages but also to dialects of English such as AAE. Our country has become much more diverse in terms of language and this is something that needs to be understood and celebrated.

    I think it’s interesting that the highest concentration areas of English Language Learners are in the West-in some counties which I presume are fairly rural-as compared to the East coast and the counties comprising NYC, Chicago, or Miami. To me it points out that there are large bilingual communities all over the United States, not just in large urban areas, which is an assumption I usually make, and that ensuring that these students receive a fair education is a national concern.

    I think it’s a huge problem that the high school graduation rate for English learners is only 64%. America is seen as a symbol of diversity and multiculturalism (regardless of whether this is valid or not). You would think that we would have enough programs in place to better support English learners–or even Standard American English learners like AAE speakers. The education system often seems paradoxical to the American image when it comes to dicussions about language and culture.
